Who was Haci Ivaz Pasha, the Ottoman architect-vizier behind Bursa’s famous Green Mosque?

In this NEWLY MOTION documentary, we explore the extraordinary life of Haci Ivaz Pasha, a soldier, statesman, vizier and architect who became one of the most important figures in early Ottoman Bursa.

After taking part in the Battle of Ankara in 1402, Ivaz Pasha supported Mehmed I during the Ottoman Interregnum, a period of political struggle that followed the defeat of Sultan Bayezid I.

His story became closely connected with Bursa when Karamanid forces attacked the city. Ivaz Pasha helped organize the defense of Bursa and was later appointed governor before rising to the rank of Ottoman vizier.

Today, his name is especially associated with the Green Mosque in Bursa, also known as Yeşil Camii, and the Green Tomb, known as Yeşil Türbe. These monuments are among the most remarkable surviving examples of early Ottoman architecture in Bursa, Turkey.

The documentary also explores his connection with Geyve Han and the wider architectural transformation of Bursa during the reign of Mehmed I.

One of the most dramatic episodes came after the death of Sultan Mehmed I in 1421. His death was reportedly concealed for around forty days while his son Murad travelled from Amasya to secure the Ottoman throne.

Ivaz Pasha continued to play an important political role under Murad II and became involved in the struggle against Mustafa Çelebi near Ulubat.

But his growing influence eventually brought him into conflict with powerful figures inside the Ottoman administration.
